A commonly misunderstood sacrament, the Anointing of the Sick is for all Christians who fall seriously ill. The sacrament brings spiritual healing and unites the sick person more closely with Christ in His Passion and death, while providing peace and courage to endure the suffering of illness or old age. Christ “has come to heal the whole man. Soul and body; he is the physician the sick have need of” (CCC1503). Just as Baptism begins the journey conforming ourselves more closely to Christ throughout our lives, the Anointing of the Sick helps prepare us to share fully in Christ’s death and resurrection.
