Baptism is the first Sacrament of the Church, “the gateway to the life in the Spirit” (CCC 1213). It is through Baptism that we become united with Christ in the Mystical Body, members of the Church. Born with original sin, which prevents the ability to arrive at a transformative relationship with the Lord, Baptism wipes away original sin, providing a new life in Christ. This new life enables us to believe, hope and love God, act under the guidance of the Holy Spirit and allow goodness to grow. While the sacrament wipes away original sin, for those over the age of seven personal sin is also forgiven. This begins the journey toward knowing Christ and imitating Him. Through Baptism we do not become saints immediately, but we are given the grace to become holy, still needing continued
nurturing and nourishment throughout our lives.
Often people don’t bother so much about the practice of their faith when they leave home and get married. For such Christians, the birth of a baby and the questions of Baptism provide a focus for a new beginning.
Parents presenting babies for baptism at St Lawrence’s are required to attend a Baptism preparation course. If you have a child for Baptism, please contact Florie in the Parish Office.
